comparison isn't the problem, quitting because of it is
confessions of a 20-something · ep 3
if you’re in your 20s and struggling to figure out what you want in life, welcome to confessions of a 20 something.
in the last video, i talked about how it’s not fair to compare your day 1 with someone’s day 100.
i think in the past i’ve always like to compare myself with others. i think it’s only natural as humans. i wouldn’t say it’s entirely negative because sometimes it really does help motivate me to do a particular thing but i think it’s very easy to fall into the trap of over comparing and then totally giving up on whatever you have set out to do.
i think what has helped me was compare the input goals rather than the output goals, especially when you’re starting out. in the context of posting on social media, when we look at other creators who have viral videos or videos that have done really well with a lot of engagement.
but when we look at our own videos that have flopped, it’s very easy to feel dejected, and maybe if you continue to compare, you would eventually give up.
what has helped me was to set input goals, for example, regardless of how a video does, i’m going to post every day or 3 times a week or whatever cadence is comfortable for you.
the rationale here is because we haven’t put in the reps yet. it’s really not fair to be comparing the final output goals with someone who has already put in the many weeks months and years of hard work.
so if you’re going through something like this, or if you know someone that is going through something similar, you know, send this video to them, let them know that they are not alone, because i think you guys just found your people.
